| CM, others pay homage to 1931 martyrs | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 13: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah today led mainstream politicians in paying homage to the martyrs of 1931 people's uprising against the autocratic Dogra rule.
The chief minister laid a wreath on the graves of the martyrs at Naqshband Sahib in the old city as a 21-gun salute and guard of honour was presented in memory of the 22 persons killed in the firing incident on this day in 1931.
Abdullah also offered 'Fateha' (prayers) for the martyrs.
Rural development minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, public enterprises minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, transport minister Qamar Ali Akhoon and chief minister's political advisor Devender Rana also paid their respects.
Ruling National Conference had decided to observe the martyrs' day with simplicity in view of the destruction of Dastageer Sahib Shrine at Khanyar on June 25. In the past, National Conference used to hold a public rally at the graveyard but the plans were shelved this year.
Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former state chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and senior party leader Tariq Ahmad Karra also paid homage to the martyrs.
All the roads leading to the graveyard were sealed off by police to prevent the separatist Hurriyat Conference leaders from holding a rally at the venue.
Restrictions were placed on movement of people five police station areas of the old city, including Khanyar and Nowhatta, as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, official sources said.
More than 22 civilians were shot dead by the soldiers of Kashmir's Dogra ruler on July 13, 1931 after people of the valley rose against the autocratic rule of the Maharaja and demanded their rights.
Decrying 13th July as the Black Day in the history of the State, Jammu Kashmir Vichar Manch (JKVM) in an interactive meeting held at Shardha Bhawan Called on the people of the state to recognize the communal agenda of the 13th, July 1931.
The meeting was among others Addressed by Dr. R.L Bhat National Vice President JKVM, H.L.Bhat National General Secretary JKVM and B.L.Bhat State President JKVM Ashok Kangan Sr.Leadere JKVM .
The participants took stock of the current situation in Kashmir and the challenges before the Displaced Hindus of Kashmir who were the primary targets of the rioters of 1931.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. R.L.Bhat pointed to the fact that the events preceding the communal riots of 13th July 1931 and the events that occurred on the Black Day itself 81 years ago were communal in character and directed against the Maharaja for not for his being a Dictator but for being a Hindu. Rioters too targeted the Hindus, their houses, Business. |
