`Those curbing Press can't be Champions of Democracy' | | | Salil Raina POONCH, July 13: Omar Abdullah, the chocolate face Chief Minister of J&K, is also famous for his handy comments on various issues on Twitter. His comments have at times evoked severe criticism. Off the Twitter, he also gave some political statements from various platforms several times on political and social issues which took political pandits by surprise and people started raising their eyebrows on his credibility and political maturity. Just some days ago, while interacting with a group of people during his awami mulakat at Srinagar, he said that, he really appreciates the people who are now questioning the Government on several issues and this is the hall mark of his Government where people are at liberty to impose any questions to the Government on any issue including financial transactions, allotment of works and achievements of various schemes on the grounds. He said that people have every right to enquire and empowering public is imperative for good governance and bringing transparency in administrative functions. Do people's queries make any difference? Curiously Omar has not taken any action against those involved in scams exposed by the media. Omar, who now seemingly appreciates the people for questioning his governance, has been critical of the newspapers that have brought to the fore irregularities in his Government. So how can Omar be a Champion of Democracy when he intimidates the press for raising issues that pinch him? Similarly he has described those politicians who raised issues of corruption and mis-governance as irrelevant people. Democracy, for Omar's information should not be confined to issuing statements. It has to be put into actual practice. |
