Army intends to institutionalize its role' Early Times Report | Changing trends in Mirwaiz Hurriyat | | Early Times Report srinagar, July 13: In a development that could have far reaching consequences on separatist politics in Kashmir, the chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the Army intends to institutionalize its role in the conflict ridden Kashmir. He was talking to a New Delhi based newspaper the other day. This is the first time when a separatist leader has issued such a statement. According to political experts, the statements reflect the changing trends in the separatist spectrum. The change apparently seems to have roots in the CBMs pursued by Government of India and Islamabad. "In the contemporary era, India and Pakistan are interested in CBMs. We have to see what role the Hurriyat can play in this changing scenario", he said. Responding to a question as to why Hurriyat did not raise issues like misuse of resources in the past, the cleric said: "There was catch and kill policy going on in Kashmir and raising such issues at that time was not conducive", he said adding "Economic independence is as important as political independence. We cannot shy away from raising issues concerning economic interests of Kashmiris." Pertinent to mention the Hurriyat has decided to strive for economic independence. "In today's world one has to think about it. Mere political independence will not suffice", he said. The separatist conglomerate has plans to support the civil society groups seeking transfer of power projects to the State. "We will definitely extend support to their campaign. People have given positive feedback to us for raising such issues", he said. |
