Omar sounds optimistic over Kashmir situation | | | early times report Srinagar, July 14: After two decades of turmoil, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah saw a silver lining on Jammu Kashmir's political horizon. Omar sounded optimistic over the increased tourist inflow to the Valley. According to him, peace if fast returning and the days of violence are over. He was speaking at a function held to honour the Buddhist leader, Dalai Lama who is currently in Kashmir. Kashmir is in the middle of a flourishing tourist season. The authorities expect record number of tourists this year. Kashmir has always been a choicest destination for foreign tourists. However, with the eruption of insurgency in 1988, foreigners were advised against visiting Kashmir by their respective governments. The turmoil claimed more than 45000 lives, as per official estimates. The peaceful situation has a comment from the former RAW chief, Daulat. He said it appears better than the best times in Kashmir. However, he cautioned that the calm may be deceptive. His apprehensions are not totally unfounded. The army too has been opposing moves for revocation of AFSPA. Although publicly acknowledging that not more than 300 militants were active in valley, army is against the withdrawal of troops or revocation of terror laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Ac. |
