Early Times Report

Jammu, July 14: Late piece of advice given by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to Amarnath pilgrims to get "genuine health certificates" has not gone down well with the large number of pilgrims waiting to undertake Yatra.
Interacting with the media persons in the Yatri Niwas base camp in Jammu, large number of pilgrims from outside the state complained that when they approached team of doctors for their routine medical check up, none of them showed any interest in carrying out the medical examination but hastened to stamp their certificate declaring them medically fit.
On Friday, responding to the question of reporters over rising number of deaths along the Amarnath Yatra route Omar Abdullah had claimed that in the absence of genuine assessment report of the pilgrims it was becoming difficult for the authorities to check rate of casualties.
He said unless pilgrims would undergo through health check up it would be possible to make a correct assessment about their physical ability to undertake the arduous journey. However, the statement given by Omar Abdullah that pilgrims were giving "wrong" medical certificates has been taken with a pinch of salt.
What can we do if state govt doctors stationed at the Yatra Bhawan are not conducting thorough medical examination of pilgrims, asked pilgrims accusing the state govt of taking their health for a ride? Omar had maintained that "On our side, we are trying to put in place a mechanism of health screening but unfortunately it seems that health certificates that are being produced by yatries are not genuine. At several other places, state government approved doctors are charging easy money from the pilgrims to declare them medically fit. Experts are of the opinion that unless medical board is set up to screen every single individual, it would be difficult to address the issue of health security of pilgrims.
