BJP demanding effective RTI law, K leadership seeking separation | Confusion & Ambivalence | | Neha JAMMU, July 15: Kashmiri leaders have suddenly given a fillip to the break-India activities. Their objective is to create a 1990-like situation in the Valley and achieve what they could not. The situation has now climaxed to the point that even Chief Minister has given a radical orientation to the ongoing secessionist movement in parts of the Valley, especially certain pockets in Srinagar city, including Jamia Masjid area. He said what exactly extremists and pro-Pakistanis like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Shabir Shah had been saying for years. Chief Minister said that New Delhi should forget that Jammu & Kashmir was an internal problem of India. Jammu & Kashmir was a political problem and India and Pakistan must start a result-oriented dialogue process, he said in Srinagar. He made this highly controversial statement only four days ago. People here in Jammu were expecting a very strong and violent reaction from the BJP considering the fact that the leadership of this outfit had been trying hard to convince them that it was an organization religiously committed to the national cause in the State and that it will not allow the Kashmiri separatists and the likes of Chief Minister to have their say in matters relating to the State's political future. The expectation had stemmed from the statements made by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley in Jammu on June 23 and in Chandigarh the following day and former Deputy Prime Minister and BJP veteran LK Advani in New Delhi on June 25. Both senior BJP leaders had denounced Jawaharlal Nehru and Congress for messing up things in Kashmir and threatened a nationwide agitation in the event of elements in New Delhi and Kashmir trying to unsettle the settled. Both declared that BJP will not allow anyone to reverse the process of integration of the State with India. Did the local BJP leadership take cognizance of what the Chief Minister said and what other Kashmiri extremists had been saying? It did not. It did not react to the Chief Minister's statement. On the contrary, it held a press conference the other day to demand an effective right to information (RTI) legislation. It did not commit a wrong by demanding an effective RTI law. In fact, it did a right thing. What, however, surprised and shocked many in Jammu was conspicuous silence on what the Chief Minister said to create doubts in the minds of people about the nature of relationship between the State and New Delhi. The BJP leaders, including party president and spokesperson, did not utter a word on the controversial and provocative statement of the Chief Minister, thus giving the people to understand that the local BJP leadership continues to grope in the dark and that it was as confused and ambivalent as it was in the past. The BJP needs to take a clear-cut stand on Jammu & Kashmir, as also on the NC, which has been crossing the line for quite sometime now and further complicating the already rather complex situation in the State. There are people in Jammu who question the BJP's track record and opine that "it would be dangerous to depend upon the undependable, directionless and politically bankrupt BJP". The BJP has to dispel this impression by its words and deeds. |
