Kishtwar beautician's lone fight for justice | `Those who threw acid on her are scot free' | | Asif Iqbal Naik KISHTWAR, July 16: Six years down the line, a Kishtwar based beautician is awaiting justice. But the inaction of the law enforcement machinery has not dampened her spirits. She seems determined to fight for justice. Recalling the fateful day, Gulnaz Begum, 34, said: "While returning from the parlour I saw one of the three accused, Liquat Malla with a glass in his hands covered with a napkin. I did not know that I was his target. When I approached my house , Liquat Malla intercepted me and threw acid on my face. After throwing acid on my face he and his associates ran away." Gulnaz was rushed to hospital by her husband. In her statement to the police, she identified the culprits but the police chose not to arrest them for unknown reasons. Gulnaz had been warned of dire consequences by some elements including the local Imam for running a beauty parlour. She apprised the police of the threats but to no avail. "Whenever I visited the police station to know the progress of the case, I was told forensic evidence was awaited", she said. However, following public pressure forced the police to arrest two accused for a day. She finally approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). Her petition is still pending for disposal. Gulnaz is alone in her fight for justice. She has re-started her business after her husband met a tragic accident. A private bank helped her stand up on her legs once again. "I will get satisfaction only when I get justice", she said. Gulnaz had to undergo turbulent times for the first two years after the incident. She had to shuttle between Delhi-Chandigarh for treatment regularly. She is all praise for her uncle who consoles her whenever the incident haunts her. |
