EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, July 17: Patients continue to suffer amid deadlock and continued strike of junior doctors at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science here.
While junior doctors at the prestigious institute boycotted work over a scuffle where some security men had allegedly roughed up some doctors, the non-gazzetted staff also threatened to strike if action was not taken against the doctors who were involved in the scuffle, sources said.
The two security men for their alleged involvement in roughing up doctors were attached by the hospital administration, however, the doctors refused to resume work demanding their suspension. "We have attached and charge-sheeted the two people, however they have lodged a counter FIR", Dr Showkat Zargar, Director SKIMS told news agency further adding he had to follow set procedures.
Regarding the strike threat by the non-gazzetted employees at the Institute, the Director said they are demanding action against the doctors also; however he said the Institute is about people's lives and politics cannot be allowed to be played there.
The administration at the Institute has cancelled all permissions for leaves and vacations of its senior doctors.
"We have cancelled the vacations of faculty in order to meet exigencies", Director SKIMS alos confirmed.
Regarding allegations of increase in deaths at the Institute, Zargar denied it outrightly and said, "This is a tertiary care hospital and many people are even found dead on arrival.
We have 700 to 800 patients admitted every day and deaths are possible, which is routine at such a hospital".
However, the Director said actions will be taken against those who fail to report to their duties.
"We have appealed them to join their duties, however if they fail to do so we will have to take action", Zargar.
