No restriction on import of timber in J&K

Srinagar, July 17: Declaring that there is no ban on import of timber, Minister for Forests and Environment Main Altaf said government has always facilitated import of timber from outside. Government has facilitated import of timber to assure its availability to the consumers in abundance which will reduce the pressure on the forests of the state, he said at a public meeting at Hangipora-Kaprin Dooru in Anantnag today.
He announced that government will open more timbers sale deposits across the state. Main Altaf directed the forest officers to provide timber to the consumers especially living near the forest areas expeditiously so that they can construct their houses before the onset of winter.
He said that the government has facilitated forest clearance for construction of roads and other projects of immense public importance, on fast track basis, so that speedy socio - economic transformation takes place in far fling and cut of areas of the State.
Observing the eco-tourism has received worldwide attention, he said that the Government too has taken various steps to promote this sector in the state. Inaugurating residential quarters at Veering completed at the cost of Rs 7.50 lakh, Main Altaf said under Compensatory Management Planning Authority (CAMPA), tourist infrastructure is being developed at various tourist destinations with main focus on eco-friendly projects for the sustainable development of the state. He also laid foundation stone for Rs 31 lack Forest Rest House at Hingipora-Kaprin and said these facilities will help in the promotion of tourism in the area.
However, he cautioned against destruction of forest adding that Jammu and Kashmir is known and lived for its forest greenery and natural beauty since long and any sort of damage to this natural wealth will badly affect tourism prospects and environment of the state.
He sought people's help to curb forest smuggling effectively. The Minister announced Rs 60 lakh for the development of forest works in the Dooru constituency.
