Heaps of stinky garbage greet passengers at Jammu railway station | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 17: The railway station which forms the gateway to the city of temples greets the passengers with heaps of stinky garbage. Jammu railway station is one of the busiest stations in the country. According to rough estimates around 40,000 passengers pour in from different parts of the country every day. However, to their dismay, Stincky garbage lying here and there greets them. The spacious premises have been virtually turned into garbage shed. Potholes and litter scattered everywhere reflect the efficiency of the concerned and the state government. Most of the passengers that pour in are destined to visit Vaishno Devi shrine. The station also lacks other facilities. There are just three platforms and dearth of benches only adds to the woes of the passengers. At times they are forced to wait for hours together on the road to catch their trains. The Railway authorities see a solution in expansion and they are thinking over it. "The Railways has got the approval for a multiplex project. It will start by next month. There was a stay on the project by the SRTC but now it has been approved and the multiplex building will provide all the world-class facilities to the passengers visiting here". Around one crore passengers enter Jammu every year and most of them prefer to travel by train. A tourist expressed dismay over lack of facilities. He said the station was important because of the Vaishno Devi Shrine and it should be upgraded for the convenience of the pilgrims. Raghuveer Sharma, a frequent traveller, is concerned over improper security. "There is no checking of platform tickets. Anybody can enter the station and nobody will ask you the reason why you are standing here. Even beggars can be seen on the platforms", he added |
