Early Times Report
Jammu, July 17: Though late but the State Government led by Omar Abdullah must awake from its deep slumber and initiate action to preserve respect and honour for the gallant officer who made a supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Young Major Akash Singh lost his life while foiling infiltration bid on September 9, 2009 at the Line of Control in border district of Poonch in Jammu Province.
Before breathing his last, Major Akash Singh gunned down two terrorists and also saved the life of an Army jawan in a fierce gunbattle that took place in Sonagali Post at Mendhar sub-sector in Poonch district.
President Pratibha Devisingh Patil conferred Shaurya Chakra upon Major Akash Singh posthumously on the occasion of the 61st Republic Day in New Delhi
An alumnus of the Officers Training Academy, Major Akash was commissioned in the 5th Maratha Light Infantry on September 4, 1999, in the post-Kargil era when the unit was deployed for the 'Operation Vijay' in the forward area of the State.
As a young officer in those trying circumstances he proved himself and kept the troops motivated.
He had also served with the battalion well in 'Operation Parakaram' as Adjutant and Platoon Commander. He also served in the insurgency-hit areas of Northeast where he led a number of successful operations.
For the cause of nation, Major Akash Singh made a supreme sacrifice and left behind wife Deepti Singh, three year old daughter Khushi and then two year old son Tejas.
