Unfinished Shaheed Maj Akash Singh Dwaar awaits Omar's quick look

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 17: In what could be described as utter disrespect to a valiant Army officer who sacrificed his life while defending nation at border, certain "petty" politicians including a police officer known for his close proximity with Congress stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad are acting as stumbling blocks for setting up of a well deserved memorial in the name of Major Akash Singh.
Ironically, the story leads to Shiv Nagar locality, Ward No 33 of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) here, where semi-furnished memorial gate stands and awaits a green signal of higher officials of JMC to get the same completed in the name of Shaheed Major Akash Singh Dwaar. The semi-furnished gateway stands exactly adjacent to Government Polytechnic College for Women and near AG's Office, Shiv Nagar road here.
The photo of the said Shaheed Major Akash Singh Dwaar clicked by ET's lensman clearly shows the dilapidated condition of the gateway and all thanks to local politicians and a police officer known to be a close confidant of Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Reliable sources in JMC revealed to Early Times that "it was in January current year that a proposal was moved to raise a beautiful gateway in the name of Major Akash Singh who was awarded Shaurya Chakra, posthumously, in January 2010. Tenders were floated for the work and finally, the work was executed in March, 2012. Though within 10 days, the 80 per cent of the work was completed with creation of foundations and fixing of heavy iron Girders but due to unnecessary objections and interventions by a DySP rank officer and some local politicians mostly belonging to BJP, the work was stopped".
Sources further informed, "The petty politicians and the said police officer also visited senior officials of Municipal Corporation and asked not to re-start the work or shift the site to some other place as the house of martyr is little way from there."
"It is disgusting that the said unscrupulous elements are indulging in such shameful acts and senior officials in JMC are watching all this like mute spectators. If there is really a Government in Jammu and Kashmir then it should intervene and ensure the early completion of the gateway at an earliest," pointed out residents of Shiv Nagar locality in one voice.
Despite repeated attempts, Commissioner, JMC was not available for comment.
