| Obama snaps separatists' oxygen | | |

Jammu, July 17: Its the end of road for separatists to raise Kashmir issue bogey at international level. US President Barack Obama's assertion that no outside solution to Kashmir issue is possible, the US President has not only turned the table but has virtually snapped the oxygen of separatists.
This statement shouldn't be seen as a U-turn of US policy on Kashmir, but is an outcome of post 9/11 changed world, which started moving away from separatism and terrorism and started gravitating towards India, which has started as major power in the world.
Obama's statement should also been seen in the context of him asking Indian Government to open doors in many sectors thus allowing Foreign Direct Investment, which could help US of economic interest.
It clearly shows that US stands to benefit with Indian economic growth rather than by antagonizing its political interests.
Terrorists have become persona-non-grata the world over and separatism is seen as root cause to it.
The Kashmir based separatists, though with tacit support of mainstream politicians and bureaucracy, has used these a tools for leverage to their advantage.
At the start of the terrorism, India was just coming out of Licence-Raj and thus it didn't hold much economic importance to the US. It was because of this reason that at the height to terrorism,. US officials would visit separatists, notable Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani, have khewa and gushtabas there and massage their egos by supporting them.
Assuming US by their stand and Pak providing both covert and overt support, separatists camp befooled thousands of ordinary Kashmir youth to take up arms and lay down their lives.
But with terrorism being stamped out by jackboots, Pakistan in teeters and India emerging as strong economic leader all has changed.

Mainstream parties are now saying that now either Autonomy or Self-Rule could work but deep down they have realized with this statement that it could remain just political sloganeering as India can't loose its economic position with loose federal structure: Autonomy to J&K. |
