Agriculture Minister for export of quality Basmati to USA

JAMMU, July 18: Minister for Agriculture Production, Ghulam Hassan Mir, today emphasised the need for close coordination between the production, post harvest management and marketing system to ensure sustainable and profitable returns to all stakeholders especially the farmers.
The Minister said this while interacting with the farmers after inspecting Sarveshwar Milling Rice Plant at Seora near Kunjwani.
Mir highlighted the efforts being made by the Government for promotion of traditional Basmati of R S Pura which is grown in about 37000 hectare area of Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts. He said that during the last two years, the Department of Agriculture has been providing 370 varieties of quality seeds of Basmati to farmers besides arranging awareness programmes, workshops and training camps for sensitizing the farmers, millers and traders about the government schemes. These efforts will greatly help to ensure agriculture production of national and international standards through latest cultivation practices, plant protection measures and integrated nutrient management.
The Minister advised the farming community and other stake holders to adhere to the recommendations and norms of Basmati Export Development Foundation and APEDA for better results. He called upon the entrepreneurs to create state of art infrastructure which matches the need of the producers and provides value added products to the consumers.
Mir added that the Ministry of Commerce GoI has permitted export of Sarveshwar Basmati to USA, Jordan and Saudi Arabia so that the farmers of the state could be benefitted. He said USA government has recently approved the quality of Sarveshwar Basmati Milling unit out of 18 units of the world. The Minister emphasized the the Sarveshwar Milling unit to ensure quality production and export of their famous Basmati brand to USA as this will not only be an individual effort but it will represent the state of J&K abroad.
Earlier, Mir inspected various milling units like drying, parboiling, milling, grading sorting facilities with colour sotter, online metal detections and fully automated packaging unit.
Later, the Minister visited Trewa in Bishnah and convened an interactive session with the farmers organised by Agriculture Department in collaboration with ACTECH Agro Private Ltd. He called upon them to form more and more Self Help Groups under National Vegetable Initiative scheme launched by GoI.
He stressed upon them to cultivate quality vegetables for which Government provides free seeds, agriculture tools besides material for shade house, net house and poly house. The scheme will empower the farmers socially and economically besides ensuring quaility vegetables to the people at reasonable rates.
Joint Director Agriculture Department Dr. S. S. Jamwal besides other senior officers of Agriculture department accompanied the Minister.
