Cornered, dejected Omar gets into confrontation with Army | | | Early Times Report Jammu , July 19 Cornered and dejected on being politely but sternly by Army that his demand for even partial revocation of AFSPA can’t be entertained, chief minister Omar Abdullah had now tried to adopt confrontation mode with the Army.
“If the situation is alarming(read on terrorism account) it points to a failure in the security grid which needs to be discussed,” Omar Abdullah told reporters on being asked for his observation on the statement of point man of security situation in Kashmir divison.
GOC 15 Corps oLt General Om Prakash had said the recent terrorists incidents suggest that the situation is alarming.
"It is an alarming situation...some incidents have taken place like the shootouts at Pampore, Kulgam and Rajpora (in south Kashmir)," GoC had said.
Importantly the chief minister made this statement a day after terrorists did strike at Civil secretariat though there was not damage but it did point to potent danger of showing laxity and intact striking capabilities of terrorists.
Prudence demanded that CM should have been guarded in his statement. However, he took this an opportunity to put the Army in dock by putting onus on it for its failure to check infiltration.
The tone and tenor of the statement is suggestive of desperation of the man who couldn’t with enough of pleading and cajoling get his desired gift but rather gets stern message to mend his tantrums.
It’s about an year that Omar Abdullah had publicly announced that AFSPA would go away from Jammu and Srinagar before the Durbar moves to Jammu.
All along till now, he issued clarifications, rejoinder, explained his view, tried to rope in key Central ministers and got into confrontation with not just Army by State unit Congress president Prof Saif-ud-din Soz.
However, as he failed to melt the ice with Army, he started turning table at it by even saying that he doesn’t understand the rigidity of Army on this account.
The point Omar is missing that Army has take a call on revocation of AFSPA by analysing the situation in long terms and it ramification with respect to strategic interests of the Country rather than on politicking of a one individual or party, who rakes this up for political gains and is the first one of leave the valley in ‘90s when the situation turned hostile against its very existence.
Army can’t act like fair-weather friends like politicians and this established norm is clear in the minds of the people who not only run the affairs of the country but work for its true betterment.
