Omar, Mufti cast votes to elect President | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July19 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and People's Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed were among the legislators to cast their votes to elect 13th President of the country. Polling was underway amid tight security at Legislative Complex, a short distance away from the Civil Secretariat, seat of the government, where militants fired a rifle grenade yesterday. However, the grenade did not explode and was later defused. The polling began at 1000 hrs and is continuing peacefully, election commission officials said, Cutting across the party lines, both the ruling National Conference (NC)- Congress combine, main opposition PDP, lone members of Communist Party of India (M), Democratic Nationalist Party and Peoples Democratic Front besides Independent Sheikh Abdul Rashid have already announced their support to UPA candidate Parnab Mukherjee. However, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Panthers Party (NPP) are supporting NDA-backed candidate P A Sangma. |
