Protests in Jammu over power crisis | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 19: Acute power crisis coupled with sweltering summer heat and humid temperature has made the life of people miserable in Jammu these days. Contrarily to the expectations of the people the Monsoon also turned dry during the first fortnight in Jammu and there were no heavy showers of rain as was expected by people to beat the Summer heat adding to their woes further. Following night-long power cuts, people today took to streets and held protest demonstrations against the unscheduled load-shedding in the city. Over 300 people, including women, from various colonies, blocked the Satwari Chowk on the highway to protest the power failure in the area during the night. The protestors, who raised anti-government slogans, even clashed with police. After a one-and-a-half hour blockade, traffic was restored on the highway. People also held protests in Bohri Patta and Hazuri Bagh areas over the power cuts through out the night. Over 200 people blocked a road in New Plot area and held demonstrations against the unscheduled power cuts in the city. Led by Jammu West Assembly Association president Sunil Dimple, they raised anti-government and anti-power department slogans and demanded smooth electricity supply. "We will launch major agitation in Jammu city against the government, which has failed to eradicate the menace of power theft," Dimple told reporters here. |
