Early Times Report

Vijaypur, July 19: Even as the cracks in Congress-National Conference coalition deepen, yet another Congress leader today took government to task for its failure to provide power and irrigation facilities to the farmers.
Former minister and Congress leader Manjeet Singh, while addressing thousands of protesters at Ramgarh today threatened agitation incase demands of the farmers of Vijaypur were not met within four days.
Singh's address evoked severe reaction from the farmers. They raised slogans against the government, Power Development Department and the District Administration.
Singh said power supply, if given is inadequate. He demanded receiving stations at Ramgarh and Vijaypur. "The farmers are also unable to run their water pumps for irrigation purpose due to non-availability water in the canals. The fields in the border villages are not receiving irrigation water from Chenab River nor from Ravi Tawi. Due to less rainfall and non-availability of the irrigation water the fields have dried up", he said.
"The government should accept the demands of the farmers which are just. The farmers are dependent on their fields and they should be helped to cultivate their fields," he suggested.
Meanwhile, a memorandum, concerning demands of the farmers, was handed over the Tehsildar Settlement Vijaypur so that it could be presented to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for necessary action.
