Bibi Halima Nursing College female students face gender discrimination
7/20/2012 11:21:44 PM
Bashir Assad
Srinagar, July 20 : Gender discrimination by a government owned institution in Jammu and Kashmir may not be new but the way Bibi Halima Nursing College discriminated meritorious female candidates is shocking.
Right from 2007 every year Bibi Halima College of Nursing and Medical Technology, running under the auspices of Jammu and Kashmir Waqaf Board, has been deputing some fifteen highly meritorious students (preferably and predominantly female) ofB.Sc (Hons) 3rd year for having an internship in King Fahad City Medical Hospital (KFCMH) Saudi Arabia as per their mutual agreement.
The internship provides a preferential claim for the B.Sc (Hons) Pass-outs in availing college placements, various job opportunities and for pursuing career advancement M.Sc (Hons) Progra mmes.
This year, in an unusual departure from the past practice and in a brazen discrimination the college administration is deputing only male students for the Internship jeopardising the bright career of female students on flimsy grounds notwithstanding the fact that the female students have all along outshined and outperformed their male counterparts and are toppers.
The B.Sc (Hons) 3rd year female students appeal the chairman Waqaf Board (Chief Minister) to personally intervene in the matter.
The college principal has unexpectedly taken a biased decision at the eleventh hour despite the fact that the outstandingly meritorious 3rd year B.Sc (Hons) female students have made all the preparations under the principal's persistent instructions depositing their passports and an additional fee for accommodation by ending June 2012.
The vice-chairman Waqaf Board is surprisingly more amenable to the proposals of the principal in her attempt at marring the future career of outstandingly meritorious female students who are more deserving for having internship in King Fahad City Medical Hospital (KFCMH) Saudi Arabia.
