Defence authorities contradict each other on spurt of militancy in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 20: The contradictory reports about the spurt of militancy violence in Kashmir Valley none other than the Defence authorities is a cause of concern to common man in the State. The distorting reports about the infiltration from across the border and sudden increase in militancy violence are surprising. The Defence authorities on one hand have rejected reports about the sudden spurt in so called successful' infiltration by militants from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) while on the other hand they themselves admit that militants are planning Fidayeen attacks in Kashmir. The two statements come from Defence authorities and common man is in a fix which one to believe. Two days back the Army came with a statement from Srinagar turning down the reports about the sudden spurt in infiltration by militants from PoK saying that counter infiltration grid is on high alert and working properly. The Defence Ministry spokesman Lt. Colonel JS Brar in a statement said that Army does not have any information that 70 militants had managed to enter in J&K since May this year. Though admitting that there were few attempts by militants to cross into Indian side after snow started melting on higher reaches particularly infiltration routes, he said alert troops guarding the LoC foiled their attempts and neutralized the infiltrators. He also maintained that Army has a counter infiltration grid working, which is often reviewing the strategy to foil any such attempt and the guard is not being lowered even during the winter season when there is snow on peaks. But on the next day, General Officer Commanding of Srinagar based 15 corps Lt General Om Prakash described the recent militant attack on National Highway at Pampore in South Kashmir as alarming and disclosed that the militants are planning fidayeen attacks in Kashmir. In this attack one Army jawan was killed and another injured. Lt. Gen Prakash further said intelligence reports reveal that they were two fidayeen who carried out the attack at Pampore National Highway and militants were planning to have Fidayeen attacks and snatch the weapons of security forces. He linked the Pampore shoot out with attacks in Kulgam and Rajpora in South Kashmir. He also admitted generally the militancy in North Kashmir is higher than South Kashmir due to infiltration through LoC the support base and huge forest area. The General who described militants as a very clever said due to slower pace of operations and reduced presence of security forces in South Kashmir the militants occupied the space and started operations. The two statements are contradictory in nature while Gen substantiates the media reports about the spurt in militant violence and occupying space by the militants left by security forces the Defence spokesman has contradicted the same. The two statements are confusing and one does not know whom to believe when both statements have come from Defence side only. Instead of rejecting the reports the Defence authorities are needed to do the complete home work as it is they who have to fight out insurgency from across the border and militancy violence within. The security forces guarding the border or interiors become the target of militants hence distorting the reports about the influx of militants or spurt in terrorist violence in Kashmir will send a wrong signal in militant camps who are hell bent to cause lot of devastation and destruction in the Valley. To counter insurgency, security forces played a yeoman's role in J&K during last 23 years but denying that militants were still active in Kashmir and infiltration has taken place in Valley will boost to those agencies who demand withdrawal of security forces and revocation of AFSPA for which the ground situation is not conducive as yet. Now common man is in fix whether he will believe Lt Gen Prakash or Defence spokesman Col Brar. |
