Farooq hails Rahul's decision to play pro-active role
Weak Cong suits weak NC

Rustam
Jammu, July 20: Patron of NC, which was founded by his father in 1938 to fight against the Dogras of Jammu Pradesh and achieve independence from Jammu, and Union Minister for Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah took no time yesterday in hailing the decision of AICC general secretary and AICC president Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi to play a big role both in the party and Government. Rahul yesterday said that he was prepared to play a more pro-active role, that the decision to this effect had been taken and that it was now for the Congress high command (read Sonia Gandhi plus Rahul Gandhi) and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to determine what role he should play.
The Indian National Congress, which was founded by the Britons in December 1885 at Mumbai with the help of 72 English educated Indians to defeat the Indian freedom struggle with the help of Indians themselves, today means Sonia and Rahul. Manmohan Singh, who was nominated by Sonia Gandhi as Prime Minister in May 2004, and the UPA Government that Manmohan Singh leads cannot move even an inch without the concurrence of the AICC president with Rahul also playing the real shots. The fact of the matter is that Sonia and Rahul have been exercising absolute powers without any accountability. This is the situation and, hence, the decision of Rahul Gandhi, who had successfully contested two Lok Sabha elections and has been more than active since 2004, has not enthused and thrilled anyone except sycophants and opportunists.
Farooq Abdullah after media in-charge of Congress and AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi and Rahul's point-man, "guru" and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh was the first to hail Rahul and his decision. Hailing the decision of Rahul, who has, like Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, failed to deliver on any front, Farooq Abdullah said that it was "time for younger leadership to takeover as persons like him (Farooq Abdullah) had already served the country for years and continue to serve" and that "it would be only desirable if Rahul starts playing a bigger role sooner than later".
Why did Farooq Abdullah hail the Rahul's decision? The reasons are not difficult to fathom. One of the fundamental reasons is that the elevation of Rahul in the Congress party as well as his induction in the Union Council of Ministers suits the NC very much. It suits the NC because it can make Rahul Gandhi do what it wants him to do. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah maintains very good relations with Rahul. Farooq Abdullah's son-in-law Sachin Pilot is already there in the Union Council of Ministers to lobby for his brother-in-law and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah owes his office to Rahul. Had Rahul not come to his rescue in 2010, Omar Abdullah would have been sacked, saying he was responsible "governance deficit". Rahul elevation also helps the otherwise highly weak and "unpopular" NC in another way. For example, his elevation in the party and induction in the Union Government would lower the morale of those Congressmen in Jammu & Kashmir who want the Congress high command to remove Omar Abdullah from office so that any Congress leader is able to lead the State Government. The NC has only 28 members in the 87-Member House. It is ruling the State in alliance with the Congress but behaving in a fashion that makes people feel that it is running a single party Government. In other words, the elevation of Rahul in the party and his induction in the Government will not only dampen the spirit of many a local Congressman but will help the otherwise weak NC to further consolidate its hold over the power apparatus.
Farooq Abdullah is a shrewd politician. He knows how to cultivate national political leaders and remain in power. He and his NC can share power with the Congress and they can share power with the BJP as well. His support to the Rahul's decision could be interpreted as a political move aimed at further pleasing the Congress's Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections. The moral of the story is that weak Congress suits the weak NC. As for Rahul, he remains a greenhorn in politics despite his being in the political arena for more than 8 years now.
