SC force Govt to think logically on Amarnath deaths | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 20: A simple logical question by Supreme Court over continuous death of Amarnath pilgrims exposes the sincerity of State Government in continuation of yatra which is likely to cross all previous records this year. "Every day we hear someone dies. The high rate of mortality is undisputed," said Supreme Court today while directing constitution of panel to study reasons for the Amarnath deaths. The Supreme Court decisions to set up committee comes a day after Amarnath Shrine Board had in strangely put the onus of death on deceased for either being not in good health or for not abiding by medical instructions. The Board in a note issue here last evening didn't even made a mention of lack of medical facilities and logistics there. The Supreme Court has rightly said today that the road is too narrow and the route lacks proper logistics and it is more pathetic for female pilgrims who had to attend natures call or take a bath. It's not something that this absence of logistics had popped up all of a sudden forcing the apex court of the country to take notice of it. On the contrary, it reflects the total lack of concern of the State Government to put in place the required arrangements for smooth conduct of the yatra. Even sub-committee appointed by the Amarnath Shrine Board, to look into the aspect of curtailment of yatra period, which if finally recommended and was implemented by the Government, had also talked about construction and widening of the track. The suggestion was made about seven-month time but the Government didn't deem it fit to take this recommendation seriously but rather specifically picked up the issue of curtailment of yatra to suit its interests rather vested interests. The Board had in fact in an agreement to end 2008 Amarnath land row had also agreed in principle to look into these aspects of proper logistics but conveniently evaded them as the temper cooled down. The points raised by Supreme Court are simple and as it itself observed that 'it requires thinking at all levels' points to the fact that how much it has been in the minds of the person running the administration. This SC poser aptly reflects that there was no thinking in place for smooth conduct of yatra and the only thinking that was there in the minds of the Government was to build public perception in its favour for curtailment of yatra period. Had the Government and the Board given even iota of thinking for placing logistics than it gave for curtailment of yatra, the SC would not have come into picture. But now with apex court in clear picture the Government would be forced to make rightful thinking though not obligingly. |
