Rift between Vakil, Taj to weaken Congress
Advantage NC

JAMMU, July 21: The decision of state government to accord sanction to prosecute senior JKPCC functionary and former cabinet minister Abdul Gani Vakil for levelling "malicious, baseless and defamatory" allegations and charges of corruption against another Congress leader and PHE minister Taj Mhi-ud-Din will surely cause explosions in the Congress camp, which is already faction-ridden and not really popular by any standard. The government on Friday asked the public prosecutor, Jammu, to lodge a complaint against Vakil under section 500 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) before the Sessions Judge, Jammu. The Law Department through SRO-232 issued formal sanction to prosecute Vakil through SRO-232.
The rift is between the two Congress leaders who are not with JKPCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz. Vakil is a bitter critic of Soz and intensely pro-Ghulam Nabi Azad. Taj, on the other hand, is not only known for his bias against Soz, but also for his very close relations with chief minister Omar Abdullah. It was Taj who swung solidly behind Omar Abdullah when a powerful section within the Congress party had raised pitch and demanded the revival of 2002 power-sharing formula so that some Congress leader could took over as chief minister on or before January 5, 2011, when Omar Abdullah completed three years in office. Taj had asserted at least thrice that Omar Abdullah will complete full term of six years in office. Those close to Soz had on several occasions demanded disciplinary action against these "erring" Congress leaders. Some of them had even reportedly approached the Congress high command and demanded its intervention to set things right in the Congress party by reining in Vakil, Taj and a few other Congress leaders. .
The decision of the state government to sanction prosecution of Vakil is not an extraordinary decision. It will damage the Congress party and its poll prospects, with Vakil further intensifying anti-Taj campaign. It will also help the NC to a considerable extent. The NC would use the spat for giving a new fillip to factionalism within the Congress and further tightening its grip over the state's political and administrative apparatus. It will use the policy of divide and rule unchecked by pitting one Congress leader against another, as it knows that the Congress leadership is a divided lot.
That the decision is bound to make Vakil lose his nerve and mount blistering attack on the PHE minister could be seen from his very first reaction. The reaction was indeed very sharp. Without mincing words, the unfazed but visibly angry Vakil held the ground firmly and stood by the charges he had been levelling against Mhi-ud-Din for months now. In fact, he accused the NC-led government of indulging in politics of "political vendetta" and shielding Taj and overlooking his "misdeeds". "The government's decision to accord sanction against me is a political vendetta to appease PHE minister and it is a move to cover up his misdeeds. I seek an inquiry into an illegal occupation of more than 342 kanals of private land by three daughters of the minister at village Chak-Lalushah (Tawi Island), Jammu. An inquiry should be ordered about milk factory and posh bungalow constructed on the State Land at village Chak-lalushah. An inquiry should be ordered why eight tube-wells were established by government in the same land," Vakil said while taking on the state government and PHE minister.
The attack of Vakil on the NC-led government was no less scathing. Accusing the government of adopting selective approach, he said: "There is no evidence against me and still sanction was issued. On the other hand, the government is sleeping over cases in which State Vigilance Organization (SVO) has sought sanction for prosecution of tainted bureaucrats who are involved in various scams like Gulmarg land scam, JAKFED scam, illegal appointments and irregularities in various departments. They are sleeping over land grabbing cases in which there is nexus between politicians and land mafia…The sanctioning authority has refused sanction against a sitting minister who was involved in making 55 illegal appointments in State Legal Services Authority despite the SVO establishing case against him".
There is no doubt that the decision under scrutiny will further weaken the Congress party in the state, but, at the same time, it can also be said that the decision could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. It all depends on Vakil. A sustained campaign would surely help the people know who in the state are looting and plundering the public money and grabbing land, state or otherwise, on an unprecedented scale and how the paupers became multi-millionaire overnight.
