Will Washington stick to aid cut plan to Pakistan?

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 21: Will the level of Islamabad's diplomatic, moral, logistic and material support given to terrorists register decrease following a new threat of major aid cut to Pakistan from Washington?Or will China come to the aid of Pakistan if the latter ignored pressure being mounted by Washington for playing a sincere ally to the US in the ongoing war against terror ?
These questions have assumed added importance after the law makers in Washington favoured a major aid cut to Pakistan as a punishment for playing the role of a deceitful ally in the ongoing war against terror.
In its latest blow at Pakistan, the US House of Representatives has unanimously voted to cut military aid to it by a whopping 650 million dollars, with a top Republican lawmaker calling the country "Benedict Arnold", the most well-known traitor in American history.
The amendment to cut the aid, which was proposed by Republican Congressman Ted Poe, passed on the floor of the House with a voice vote.Poe had demanded a 1.3 billion dollar cut, but settled for the 650 million dollar cut. The measure will now go to Senate for approval.
"Pakistan is the 'Benedict Arnold' to America in the war on terror. They are disloyal, deceptive and a danger to the United States," said Poe, a member of the House of Foreign Affairs Committee. The US law makers, dubbing Pakistan as a so-called ally in the war against terror, have stated that Islamabad continued to take billions in US aid, while funding the militants who attack the Americans. "And we've kept the money flowing. It's time we turn off the tap," Poe said.
In fact during the last over three decades Washington has been giving liberal financial assistance besides heavy military aid Pakistan and it has taken over two decades for the US lawmakers to understand and this very US aid was being used for promoting and helping terrorists in carrrying out strikes in Indian cities and states, including Jammu and Kashmir.
What seems to have intrigued Washington is the way Islamabad and its agencies have been using the US military and non-military aid against the Americans.Bigger surprise is the way Islamabad and its agencies have ignored US protests over misuse of its aid when Pakistan has been banking on US aid for tackling even the energy crisis and flood devastation.
Experts are of the opinion that China may open the st rings of its purse but Beijing cannot afford to compensate the loss that Pakistan may suffer in case Washington approved major aid cut to Islamabad.Consequently,Islamabad may buckle under the US pressure and act against terrorists by demolishing their hideouts and bases in Pakistan and in areas on Afghan-Pakistan border.Once it was done the level of militancy related activities and violence in Jammu and Kashmir and in other Indian states may witness a marked decr ease (eom)
