Amarnath, Vaishno Devi yatra touches record number | | | Jammu: Following restrictions from separatists on foreign tourists for visiting Kashmir the flow of foreign holidayers and trekkers to the scenic Kashmir valley has touched a new level since last year when about 70,000 foriegners visited the valley. As per rough estimates indicated that till the third week of July this season more than 50,000 foreigners have visited Kashmir and over 25,000 foreign tourists, most of them trekkers, are scheduled to visit the valley besides the heights in Kargil and Leh districts. Official sources said that since 1974, when Ladakh was thrown open to foreigners, the 'land of lamas' has become a cherished spot for rest, recreation and trekking for these foreign tourists. According to sources, since the last year the tourist traffic to Kashmir, which had been hit hard by militancy related violence, too has touched a new heights and visitors' number is expected to touch over two million counts who visited Kashmir valley during current year. Along with the bumper tourist traffic the rush to the holy cave of Amarnath too has witnessed a new record. Despite the fact that over 85 yatris died owing to cardiac problems more than 5.65 lakh pilgrims have made it to the mountain cave till date. The authorities expect about seven lakh pilgrims to visit the shrine till August 2, that last day of the annual yatra. They said that peace in valley is the key to the success of tourism industry and pilgrims' traffic. Sources also said whenever peace gets destablised in Kashmir it directly affects even the pilgrim traffic to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and other religious places. They said that call of the two famous and historic shrines, Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath cave, is so irresistible for the devotees that lakhs of pilgrims have made it to these two shrines despite security related problems. |
