Police arrests KU's journalism student | | | Srinagar: Students of Kashmir University's Media Education Research Centre (MERC) today said that police illegally detained one of their colleagues on Wednesday. The students from MERC who approached the media persons at Press Enclave here said that police was attempting to frame Peerzada Mohammad Iqbal, a 1st semester student, in some fictitious case. "On July 18, Iqbal received a call from Ram Munshi Bagh Police station when he was in the classroom," a student of the department said. "The caller asked him to visit the police station the same day," he added. The students said Iqbal informed his family and took his uncle along to the police station in the evening the same day. "However, he was detained there while his uncle was asked to leave," they said, adding that Iqbal continues to be under detention. "On Friday, we were astonished to see anti-India and pro-stone pelting status update on Iqbal's Facebook account," said another student. "How come Iqbal who is under police detention and has no access to the internet can use the Facebook in custody," the students asked. "It is police who are uploading such status on Iqbal's FB account which can be used to book him later on," they said. "We fear that police is trying to build some false case against him." The students threatened to boycott classes and launch the agitation in the campus if Iqbal was not released by Monday. Xxxxxxxx |
