NC swears by accession, demands autonomy | `Before AFSA revocation, Omar must punish erring JKP Cops' | | Srinagar: The National Conference started the Holy Month of Ramadhan by demanding restoration of autonomy and revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act as a goodwill gesture to address mistrust. "Honor instrument of accession and restore autonomy", Tanveer Said, the spokesman of NC said today. Which instrument of accession is Tanveer talking about by the way? His Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has challenged it totality repeatedly during the past three years. The NC hits hard at the instrument of accession when it suits it and swears by it to safeguard its petty interests. His appeal to all shades of opinion to converge on a common platform to ensure restoration of autonomy will give in vain. The gullible people of the state have now understood that NC was never serious about its autonomy demand. The demand was first conceded by Sher-e-kashmir in 1975, then by Farooq Abdullah during his regime and latest by Omar Abdullah when he was given a full term in office. Interestingly on all the occasions, New Delhi was harsh on the Abdullahs. Sher-e-Kashmir was desperate for power and accepted whatever was given to him. Farooq Abdullah's autonomy document was not even read by the then government of India. And Omar Abdullah was told to behave like a good boy in lieu of a full term in office and he obeyed. And for God's sake, NC must go for a survey to ascertain whether people need autonomy or not. Reports suggest nobody in Jammu needs autonomy, Ladakhis have got it and Kashmiris hate the very word. Tanvir also renewed his demand for revocation of AFSPA."The Holy month of Ramadan has started and what better time could it be for the centre as a goodwill gesture to withdraw Armed Forces Special Powers Act from areas not affected by militancy anymore" said Tanvir. Reiterating the commitment of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to revoke AFSPA the Spokesman said that the party stands committed to ensure that AFSPA is revoked and added that militancy-related incidents have gone down. For Tanvir's information, the Chief Minister is powerful enough to revoke the law on his own. Has Omar brought erring police personnel to justice who are not protected by AFSPA? Unless he takes the erring policemen to task, his campaign for revocation of AFSPA bears no meaning. |
