Who scuttled K Rajendra's prospects for top post …? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 21: It is finally official. With rumours running high on certain names for the top post in the J&K Police Department , it is AK Prasad, at present Additional Director General IB , whose name has been 'cleared' from the quarters that matter in New Delhi. With this the speculations followed by some arguments and counter arguments over the name of K Rajendra , the Additional Director General , as a front runner for the DGP post have been put on rest. But questions still make rounds as to why and who actually scuttled the prospects of the man, yet again from outside, despite these having reached at a fruitful and acceptable stage at one point of time during the 'search phase'. In matters of top level and key appointments in J&K, it has been proved once again that it is the decision of New Delhi that ultimately prevails in this sensitive state. Notwithstanding resistance from some quarters in the state, it is an 'outsider' who will take over the charge of super cop most likely by the month end or on August one. At least opposition on this count for K Rajendra , who has served over 25 years in the state in various senior capacities in the Police Department and handled sensitive situations well in terms of fighting militancy in the state, does not fit well with new officer for he too is from outside and somewhat 'alien' to the Police Department. Sources said apart from strong resistance put forth by some politicians including some cabinet ministers for appointing K Rajendra as DGP, there were certain elements within the Department who were never in favour of his elevation to the top post. Sources said while apparently it was the number of years , here in this case not having served less than 30 years, that was put as the main reason by the state government for he not fulfilling the 'eligibility' criteria , it was only a small pretext that could have been easily and mutually settled by the allies of coalition had there been political will and desire for him to take over the responsibilities of DGP. Sources further said while politicians belonging to both the parties had their own 'apprehensions and fears' for his taking over as DGP prompting them to oppose the name forthwith, in the Police Department the 'revolt' of Police employees over an 'incident' at the lower level against Rajendra seen in 1990 also attributed to some extent in scuttling his prospects for making it to the top post. However, sources also said that government cumulatively also did not favour K Rajendra's name for top post for a 'set of reasons', related with functioning of the Police Department in general and some very sensitive matters the DGP is supposed to handle in Home Department in the sensitive state. |
