Assistant Professor lodges complaint with VC | Senior University faculty teaching in private tutorials during working hours | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, July 22: An Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu has complained to the Vice Chancellor that a senior member of the faculty has been shirking his scheduled classes and teaching in a private tutorial located near the University campus at Bikram Chowk during the university working hours. The serious allegations have been raised by the Assistant Professor against Dalip Singh Jamwal the Head of the Department and president of the Jammu University Teachers' Association (JUTA). An officer of the Vice Chancellor secretariat confirmed the receipt of the complaint, but refused to elaborate on the issue. Meanwhile, the complainant alleges that the Professor in question either does not turn up for his classes and sends substitute teachers or comes late. Sources disclosed that university teachers taking up such assignments in private tutorials get anything between Rs. 1000 to 1500 per lecture. Even though the Vice Chancellor, Prof. MP Singh Ishar is believed to have taken cognizance of the complaint, sources in the university suggested that JUTA president is not the only one involved in the irregularity pointed out by the complainant. "There are several university teachers who teach in the private tutorials during university working hours and make money at the cost of their regular classes for which they are paid huge salaries", said a university employee. "There is no mechanism to ensure that the teachers turned up for their regular classes and attended the university during its working hours" he added. Prof. RD Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs of the university, who has recently been named to head the BOPEE when contacted said, "according to the UGC guidelines, the university teachers can deliver guest lectures or extension lectures in private institutions, but they cannot accept regular wages against them. They must also ensure that they do not undertake such assignments at the cost of their normal duties in the university" he added. |
