Increasing number of casualties leads to decrease in Amarnath pilgrims rush | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 22: The increasing number of deaths during the first 26 days of Amarnath pilgrimage has lead to decrease in the number of yatris to holy cave for last one week. The number of pilgrims who visited holy cave during first fortnight of pilgrimage was over 20,000 pilgrims per day which has now come down to 10,000 pilgrims daily. Sources said the main reason for decline in yatra rush was increasing number of casualties on the holy cave tracks both from Pahalgam and Baltal sides. The pilgrims who had already made bookings for second fortnight of July to visit cave shrine have cancelled their tickets following the reports of heavy casualties of pilgrims during first 25 days of yatra, sources added. Sources said even the rumours were spread that there were no proper facilities for pilgrims enroute to holy cave situated at the height of 3,888 meters. Some pilgrims alleged that no medicines were provided to them in the Government make shift dispensaries at Baltal and other places and the yatris who need emergency medicare facilities were asked in government dispensaries to purchase medicines from market. Even there were no proper facilities of oxygen cylinders enroute in government make shift dispensaries said Bajrang Dal co-convener Nand Kishore. He said this has been one of the main reasons for increasing deaths enroute. Moreover, the pilgrims were overcharged by poniwalas, tent owners, taxi operators etc. Besides that exhorbitant rates are charged for shifting of dead to Jammu and other parts of country by private taxi operators and there is no control and check of the Government on the same, he added. Even the yatris are confronting many problems in case they want to shift the dead body to Srinagar from Baltal or Nunwan, Pahalgam by air. The claims of Government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board have proved totally hollow in providing facilities to pilgrims, said Pandey National VP Bajrang Dal. He said it is unfortunate that over 1.50 crore pilgrims visit different shrines of J&K every year spending hundreds of crores of rupees in the State to boost its economy, but they were not being provided the same kind of facilities as they deserve, he added. Mr Pandey said this gives a wrong impression about the state outside and appealed government to improve facilities for pilgrims. |
