Arun dismisses Article 370 as a "conspiracy" | Failure Of Local BJP Leadership | | Neha Jammu, July 23: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Arun Jaitley, who is also considered as BJP ideologue and trouble-shooter and who had looked after party affairs in Jammu & Kashmir for several years, has done it yet again. He takes great interest in Jammu & Kashmir affairs. Suggesting a solution to what ails Kashmir, he said the other day in New Delhi that if the problem in Kashmir is to be surmounted and the people of the State are to exercise all the rights made available by the Indian Constitution, Article 370 has to go root and branch. He not only dismissed Article 370 as a "conspiracy" against the people of Jammu & Kashmir, but also described it as the biggest blunder Congress boss and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru committed in October 1949 to appease someone in Kashmir. He did not name the man, but he gave a broad hint. The man was none other than Sheikh Abdullah, who had worked for years to achieve separation of Kashmir from Jammu. It was at his behest that Nehru bungled and granted "special status" to Jammu & Kashmir through Article 370. Nehru's judgment on men and matters was very poor. Besides, he was vindictive and revengeful. Arun Jaitley denounced Nehru and the Congress for what they did to create a serious problem in Jammu & Kashmir. It was not a secret that Jaitley was a bitter critic of Nehru and Article 370. He had been speaking against both since decades now. However, his campaign against Nehru and Article 370 has become bitter and shrill, particularly since June 23, 2012. It was that day that he visited Jammu and spoke extensively on what created problem in Jammu & Kashmir and what had made the life of the people of the State in general and refugees in particular miserable. Without mincing words, he held Nehru and Article 370 responsible for whatever that happened in the State after October 1947. Ever since June 23, Arun Jaitley has been using each and every available opportunity to attack Nehru, demand abrogation of Article 370 and urge the concerned authorities to hasten the process of the State's integration with India so that it is brought at par with other States of the Union and its people enjoy all the civil and political rights available to their brethren outside the State. That his campaign against Nehru has become shrill could be seen from what he said in New Delhi. He said: "Former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's vision for the State was flawed. Panditji's vision for Kashmir proved very costly for India. It was a flawed vision. Giving special status to the State fanned separatist sentiments. It was a blunder among many other blunders in the approach to the issue of Jammu & Kashmir. Article 370 is doing more harm than good to the people of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. It hampers their progress in many ways. It was a conspiracy against them". He said many other things, but the upshot was the same. Jaitley was right and his formulations on Nehru, Congress and Article 370 appeared flawless. That Jaitley was absolutely right and that Article 370 deprived the people of the State even those normal political rights which are available to all other Indians could be seen from the fact that the President of India, at the behest of the Union Cabinet, keep the people of Jammu & Kashmir under his/her rule for any number of years invoking this Article. However, to point out all this is not to suggest that everything was right in what Jaitley said. He was wrong when he said that one of the factors responsible for the problem in Kashmir is lack of economic development. "The problem of Kashmir is mainly because of two factors -- cross border terrorism and economic development. Until the terrorism from across the border stops, peace cannot come. And Centre should usher in more economic development," he said. The fact is that Kashmir is over-fed, over-developed, over-pampered and extraordinarily prosperous. It is Jammu Pradesh and Ladakh province where the people, barring those close to the corridors of power, lead a miserable life. It appears that the local BJP leadership has kept Jaitley in the dark. Had this not been the case, Jaitley would not have said what he said while cataloging factors responsible for the problem in Kashmir. |
