Vohra calls SASB meeting amidst mounting deaths in Amarnath yatra | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 23: Stung by the frequent interventions of the apex court in the wake of unchecked and increasing number of deaths in the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, the Governor N N Vohra chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has summoned the emergency meeting of the statuary board at Raj Bhawan Srinagar on Wednesday. Incidentally it is the first meeting of the Board this year. The Governor who is cornered from all sides for total mess in the pilgrimage this year, including from the Chief Minister who spoke about inability to properly regulate the pilgrim traffic, is keen to keep the Board members on board on all issues including much concerned issue of medical cover. For the purpose all the members would be conducted to cave shrine in the morning for VIP darshan. They would have the feel of the arrangements. This is all viewed as an effort to offset the blame the board has been getting by listing out the detailed arrangements made for this year's yatra. The SC constituted high powered Committee of senior central and state officers have yet to visit the Shrine. The SC constituted this multi member committee on 20th July and directed to submit the report to it on 13th August. It is quite significant that the daily yatra has now dwindled to manageable extent and would still come down by the time the SC team would visit the shrine. Meanwhile, the SC today issued fresh directions to requisition medical manpower from UP, Punjab and the centre to augment the medical facility in pilgrimage, which it feels is not up to the mark. The Board and the State Govt is not taking these frequent direction kindly but had no option as messing conditions of the yatra have reached at the doorstep of the apex court. Apart from lack of medical facilities, the yatra is marked by lack of regulation of pilgrim traffic including at the Bhawan, poor condition of the track, regulating traffic of horses and palkis, proper way offering parsad at the sanctum sanctorum, non display of rates fixed for different items including palki and horses etc. For some of these things, the board does not need expert committee to advice. He board meeting may not be reduced to damage control exercise. |
