Fissures in National Conference

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 23: Whether it is State unit of Congress, the BJP or for that matter the National Conference - internal bickering has damaged the image of these parties.
Split of State unit of BJP into two factions, strapping factionalism within Congress has been hitting the headlines for last couple of years. The then Congress leaders trading serious charges against each other has entertained the people since 2011 but what was happening within National Conference was even more shocking and interesting too, however, some invisible hands refrained the NC leaders from going public and "invisible hands" for some were the arms of power chairs.
Past two or three years bear testimony that Congress leaders of rival factions publicly maligned the image and character of each other and even traded serious charges against each other to weaken their own party men. However, what can be described as blessing in disguise that most of the people attributed the allegations rather accusations to the internal bickering and personal animosity burying the truth beneath the soil. And with the passage of time, people found nothing in Congress leaders more than that of being entertainers.
As for the BJP is concerned, people don't take them serious anymore because the party is suffering leadership crises and amongst the available stuff none has the potential or capacity to lead the party.
Now while watching the developments within that party from a close angle, one finds weird and wonderful kind of internal strife in National Conference folders. Crises within National Conference are multidimensional; crises within organization and crises within legislature party.
The failure to hold party elections in due time has lead to internal bickering in National Conference organization .The party constitution calls for holding elections after every three years for all crucial posts including that of president, vice president and general secretary. The delay has triggered unrest in the party rank and files.
Delay in the party elections has triggered "groupism" within the party cadre and party leadership is not able to go for the election of office bearers and by resorting to stop-gap arrangements, National Conference leadership has made known its inability to triumph over the fissures expanding from within.
The party saw last elections in 2005 and were due in 2008 as party constitution calls for holding party elections after every three years, however, the party leadership is making stop-gap arrangements since long to avoid party elections for obvious reasons as the voices of rebellion within that party are growing louder with each passing day. The fact remains that the present body of the party stands dissolved automatically if constitution of the party is invoked.
President of National Conference seizes to be president and so the general secretary and as such every nomination whether that of working president, chief spokesperson, additional general secretary, vice president or provincial spokesperson, by the president is unconstitutional. Is it not shocking that oldest political party of Jammu and Kashmir is facing serious crises as it doesn't have a permanent body of office bearers.
Though insiders attribute the long delay in party elections to 2008 Amarnath land row, 2009 Shopian incident and 2010 unrest, however, the big question is that there was a peaceful 2011 and we are in the mid of a calm 2012, why elections were not held in last one and a half year.
On the other hand, internal strife within legislature party of NC is even more shocking. There is a rift between seniors and youngsters, rift between haves and have-nots (Ministers and legislators). Allegedly some youngsters have started a vicious campaign to tarnish the image of seniors particularly that of Finance Minister Ab. Rahim Rather. "It is not opposition PDP but his own people in the Government who have waged a war against Rather to defame him and mischief his public life" an insider told Early Times adding that Rather is a victim of political vendetta and that he has grown very weak now owing to the strong rivalry he faces from within.
