BJP alleges discrimination against Jammu region by Govt
7/24/2012 11:38:29 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 24 : With several parts of Jammu region witnessing protests over long and unscheduled power cuts, BJP today alleged discrimination against the region by the Jammu and Kashmir government and said the problem commences "as soon as capital of the state shifts to Srinagar." "One cannot understand as to why the Power Development department starts power curtailment in Jammu as soon as the Secretariat moves to summer capital Srinagar. Government should answer this," BJP legislator Ashok Khajuria said here. Khajuria, who is BJP's national executive member and MLA of Jammu East, was addressing a gathering here. He said in these days of summers, almost everyone who calls him has a common grievance of unscheduled and long power cuts despite the fact that they have been regularly paying their tariff to the department. "Jammu is being gravely discriminated on all fronts," the BJP leader alleged. Due to these power cuts people and businesses are being hit, he said. Such a development is also an indicator of the mindset of state government, which has been charged of favouring the Valley and ignoring Jammu and Ladakh regions even in matters of providing basic amenities, he said. A government should work in an impartial manner and treat all the regions equally, he said. People in several areas resorted to demonstrations and burnt effigies of the government against the unscheduled power cuts. Over 300 protesters assembled on Jammu-Poonch highway in Domana area.
Raising anti-government and anti-power ministry slogans, they blocked the highway for 3 hours by burning tyres and effigies of the state government.
