Equating Kashmiri aspirations with Jammu aspirations | Arun causes furore in NC camp | | Neha Jammu, July 24: The national and rational stand taken by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, has rattled and alarmed the sectarian and separatist Kashmiri leadership. Jaitley has been speaking against Jawaharlal Nehru, Congress party and Article 370 of the Indian Constitution under which the solitary State of Jammu & Kashmir is being treated differently and underlining the need to integrate the State completely with the national mainstream. Jaitley has been terming Article 370 as a "conspiracy" and saying that it is because of this provision that the people of the State couldn't obtain what was their legitimate due. Arun has not only been roundly condemning Nehru for the blunders that he committed in Jammu & Kashmir, but has also been saying day-in and day-out that the report of New-Delhi-appointed three interlocutors on Jammu & Kashmir "suffers from the Nehruvian mindset". Jaitley is not exaggerating things. He is only speaking the truth and exposing those who considered the Kashmiri Muslims a race apart and separated Jammu & Kashmir from the national mainstream. What Jaitley has been saying is what a very vast majority of the people in the State who have suffered at the hands of the sectarian and fundamentally Valley-centric Kashmiri leadership religiously believes in. Hence, he deserves bouquets and not brickbats. One can only hope and pray that Jaitley and his colleagues in the party and other secular forces in the country would work in tandem for the larger national cause in the State as well as empowerment of the neglected communities and neglected regions of the State like Jammu Pradesh and Ladakh Province. That the stand taken by Jaitley on Article 370 will cause a furore in Kashmir was a foregone conclusion. For, the bulk of Kashmiri leadership never expected that Jaitley would deviate from the Atal Behari Vajpayee line on Jammu & Kashmir and unleash a no-holds-barred anti-Article 370 campaign. Vajpayee is commended in Kashmir and Pakistan by everyone because the former Prime Minister had planned to compromise the Indian position in Jammu & Kashmir by conceding what Pakistan and its Kashmir-based agents wanted: a step short of Kashmir's complete separation from India, autonomous status for Kashmir, division of Jammu Pradesh along Chenab River on communal lines, India-Pakistan joint-control over the Indian Jammu & Kashmir, demilitarization and soft borders. What Jaitley has been advocating for weeks now is nothing but a complete negation of the Vajpayee line. There are elements who are attaching motives to what could be termed as a change of heart on the part of Jaitley saying he is not serious about what he has started saying and that what he has been saying is no more than a "rhetoric". This is not a right approach. Reacting yesterday to the Jaitley's otherwise commendable views on Jammu & Kashmir, the ruling National Conference, which has never ever appreciated the Indian political system and Indian Constitutional framework and consistently sought separation from the national mainstream to re-establish in the State a local oligarchy so that it could exercise unbridled legislative, executive, and even judicial powers, its spokesperson said, "it will not allow anyone change or weaken the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370 safeguards the identity and interest of the people of the State and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has categorically said and the party reiterates that it will not let anyone change, alter or weaken that special status". What he did not stop just there. He lost his balance of mind and went on to say "I am surprised that leaders of a party which was once headed by a person of A.B Vajpayee's stature would talk so lame, these leaders are either suffering from senile dementia or are deliberately ignoring the ground realities. The BJP always had an agenda to divide people on region and religion basis. They are suffering from the so-called policy paralysis and they feel racking such issues might fetch them some votes and improve their credibility in the country. A party which does not respect the stand of the Parliament about Article 370 of which Jaitley is also a member, what do you expect from them other then unconstitutional, disruptive and divisive politics. Even after so much of suffering and pain, BJP still shamelessly uses people's miseries to meet their petty political end". That the National Conference, which has all along brazenly indulged in divisive and communal politics and outraged the nationalist constituency in the State, has accused Jaitley of taking recourse to "unconstitutional, disruptive and divisive politics" speaks of its double-speak and double-standards. It cannot speak for the people of Jammu Pradesh and Ladakh Province. For, they do not take Article 370 as an elixir to life; they describe this Article as deadly poison. Will the local BJP leadership take the NC and similar other formations head on and make the Jaitley's views on Article 370 the cornerstone of their press conferences, speeches and statements? Or, will they continue to make statements which convey nothing but its ambivalence and muddled thinking? |
