Govt vehicles to repaint their Blue number plates Black | SRO to revoke 'out of the blue' order soon | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, July 24: Having received strictures from the Apex Court for delay in enforcing high security number plates, and removing tinted glasses, the State Government has yet again defied the guidelines of the Supreme Court by notifying an order to paint number plates of all Government vehicles in blue letters. The order was issued by the State Ministry of Transport according to which all Government departments were asked to paint the number plates of their vehicles in blue letters on white background so as to differentiate them from private or commercial vehicles. Following the order, number plates of all the vehicles of all Government departments including those of the autonomous bodies under the Government were painted blue. However, the order issued by the Department of Transport 'out of the blue' was actually not in line with the order of the Union Ministry of Surface Transport and the Ministry of Home, also whetted by the apex court according to which all vehicles other than the commercial vehicles across the country were required to have security number plates painted in black on white background that would enable any vehicle to be located across the length and breadth of the country at any given point of time. The Regional Transport Authority, however, brought the inadvertent slip by the department in the notice of the Minister for Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon, who has directed the department to undo the wrong. "We brought into the notice of the Minister that the order was incoherent to the directions of the Centre and the Apex Court and the Minister has given his nod to revoke the order immediately" said RTO Jammu. "The file is now in the Law Department and an SRO notifying the correction shall be issued in a day or two" he added. Meanwhile, it is pertinent to mention here that while Government departments were painting their number plates in blue, a Congress Minister has painted the number plate of his private SUV in red in violation of all directions. |
