| R-Day contingent meets Governor | | Sinha exhorts youth to strive for overall excellence | | JAMMU | FEB 4 Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd) S K Sinha today exhorted youth to strive for excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities for being the worthy citizens of this great nation. Addressing this year’s Republic Day contingent at Raj Bhavan this afternoon, after their return from Delhi, the Governor hoped that they would carry forward the message of peace and national integration across the State. He said Republic Day camp is a rare opportunity for youth to exhibit their talent and interact with fellow youth from the country to know and understand each other. Despite local handicaps, the children from Jammu and Kashmir have done quite well in such events; he said and exuded confidence that given their latent talent they will prove to be the ambassadors of peace and proud citizens of the future. ‘India is fast emerging as a global economic power and asked youth to play their role in shaping the country as a super power. ‘Only sky is limit for you’, he told them. The Governor said that NCC has emerged as a global movement, which inculcates a sense of discipline among youth to motivate them to serve the society by undertaking social service and promotes camaraderie among them. From just a few hundred a few decades ago, the Corps has grown in a big family, the largest youth movement in the world, he said, adding that it represents the great ethos of Indian nation. Identifying himself with them as a former cadet, the Governor shared with the cadets his experiences as a solider and days as a cadet. He urged them to be effective instrument of giving the youth movement a new dimension. General Sinha said that he had an opportunity to interact with a young cadet from Jammu, declared as best cadet in the batch a few years ago, who has bagged a prestigious Korean scholarship for undergoing higher studies in South Korea. He hoped that her achievement will inspire others to strive for excellence and to make a niche for themselves in the most competitive world. The cadets presented a colourful cultural programme depicting various facets of the State heritage. The also sang the NCC song and presented a memento to the Governor. Senior officers of the NCC Directorate were present on the occasion.
