Jammu leadership's indifferent attitude
People's Woes

Jammu, July 26: How do the people of Jammu Pradesh view its leadership? They say that "they are suffering owing to non-availability of power and safe drinking water and holding protest demonstrations at different places for months now, but the Kashmiri-dominated NC-led coalition Government has not thought it advisable to turn its attention to their woes and mitigate their hardships". They say that "it's not at all surprising". They say that "the NC-Congress coalition Government is not just Kashmiri dominated. It is also patently Valley-centric. It never cared for them in the past. Its attitude remains unchanged even today, notwithstanding the very serious crisis that has gripped Jammu and made their life a veritable hell on earth. Its attitude will remain the same tomorrow as well. For, in the eyes of the present dispensation they are not more than third grade subjects whose life is only one of toil and penury. It, like the previous dispensations, considers Jammu Pradesh as Kashmir's colony and, hence, such a hostile attitude towards them, who have also been abandoned by New Delhi for all practical purposes. New Delhi wants to keep the Kashmiri leadership in good humour. The reasons are obvious. One of the reasons is its blackmailing power, which we do not have because we have no other option but to remain part of India".
What about the Jammu leadership and its 39 elected representatives, including 37 MLAs and 2 MPs. The people of Jammu Pradesh say that the "Congress doesn't represent us, although 13 out of 17 Congress MLAs belong to this Pradesh". They say that "these Congress MLAs are part of the Government which is being led by the NC and they have hardly spoken for us, and even for the constituencies they represent". Identical is their view on the Congress MPs. They say that the "Congress MPs only hold public Durbars as if they are the today's maharajas". As for the 8 MLAs belonging to the Kashmir-based parties like the NC, they say that "they have nothing to do with the people of Jammu Pradesh. They only extend their unflinching support to their Kashmiri bosses". In other words, they say that 21 Jammu Pradesh-based MLAs, including Ministers and 2 MPs have nothing to do with this Pradesh. "The maximum they could do is some lip service and reiterate again and again that their Government is secular; that their Government is democratic; that their Government is humane; that their Government is an ardent believer in the concept of rule of law; that their Government believes in the principle of justice and equity; and that it treats all the three regions of the State equally at all levels and in all spheres," the suffering people of Jammu Pradesh say.
What about the remaining 16 MLAs, including two Independent MLAs, who have been representing Kathua and Bishnah Assembly constituencies? The people of Jammu Pradesh say that "they do make some noises occasionally only to remain in the news. The maximum that they could do is to issue press statements or hold press conferences. They hardly come on the streets and fight for our cause as well as the cause of their Pradesh. In fact, most of them remain busy in petty politicking. That is why we have lost all their hopes and virtually left ourselves to the care of God and anarchy. They have to fend for themselves".
One may or may not endorse fully the views of the people of Jammu Pradesh, but, at the same, it cannot be denied that they do make a vary valid point when they express their dissatisfaction over the performance of their representatives in the Assembly and Lok Sabha. One cannot but endorse their view when they say that "Kashmiri leaders, without any exception, work as one man when it comes to Kashmir". In this context, they refer to the July 25 quick response of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to the small protest demonstration held in Srinagar the other day by a handful of people against the failure of the Power Development Department (PDD) to ensure round-the-clock power supply. They say that "the Chief Minister took no time in granting Rs 200 crore to ensure power supply to the extent possible". They, in addition, say that "though the Chief Minister granted Rs 200 crore in the name of the State, the bulk of the granted money will be used in Kashmir for ensuring power supply". They say many other things about their leadership, but it is not desirable to report that for various reasons.
What they say explain many things. It is for the Jammu leadership to take cognizance of what the people of Jammu Pradesh think about them and conduct itself in a fashion the Kashmiri leadership conducts itself.
