Bedi commission gets another extension, hopefully its last | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 26: The term of Justice H.S. Bedi commission probing the death of NC worker, Haji Yousuf has been extended for the 5th consecutive time. The latest extension given to the commission is for two months. A highly reputed retired judge of the country's Apex Court was appointed to probe the death of the NC worker who died in the custody of the State Crime Branch on September 30 last year after he was handed over to them by the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his Gupkar Residence in Srinagar city. Haji Yousuf had been called to the CM's residence after two other NC workers, Mohammad Yusuf Bhat of Ganderbal and Abdul Salam Rishi of Anantnag complained to the CM that Haji Yousuf had taken huge bribes from them for getting them Ministerial berth and MLC's seat in the State. The term of the one-man commission would expire on July 28. Initially the commission was to complete its task within six weeks. Justice (Retired) H.S. Bedi is a highly reputed and renowned judge whose honesty, impartiality, judicial prudence and integrity are something those are still sworn by the legal system of the country. His appointment to head the CoI had been hailed by everybody and it can be said without any fear of rebuttal that the probe being conducted by Justice (Retired) H.S. Bedi would be completed fairly and in the most transparent manner. The death of the NC worker against whom such serious allegations had been leveled by his own party men ruffled many feathers in the political circles of the State last year. It is not a question of whether the late Haji Yousuf had been a scamster or a political fraud. That is something not new at all to the politics of the State. The fact that members of the ruling party could trust the man with huge sums of money for getting them Ministerial berths or posts of legislators speaks of connections in the high places. This might not be in the terms of reference of the CoI, but in order to reach the logical conclusions about whether the NC worker had died of natural causes or there had been some mischief behind his death it would be reasonable to ascertain whether the financial exchanges had really taken place or not. The State Government is also duty bound to ensure that the huge storm that had generated in the wake of the NC worker's death settles down not by hiding facts, but by making them public and thereby protecting both the image of the Government and the persons running it. |
