After sarpanch allegedly beat up JE at Samba over poor work quality, his colleagues go on flash strike | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 26: After a sarpanch allegedly beat up a junior engineer (JE) of R&B sub-division, Samba, over "poor" quality work, his colleagues today went on flash strike and threatened to intensify their struggle if action was not taken against the accused. JE Lavinder Singh on Wednesday went to Thalora Mandi, a remote area of Samba, to inspect work on Goran-Samotha road. He told ET over phone that while he was inspecting work, Thalora Mandi sarpanch Varinder Singh came there and allegedly abused him. "The sarpanch later manhandled me and beat me up," he alleged. When Lavinder today brought the matter to the notice of his colleagues in R&B sub-division, Samba, they went on flash strike and struck work. A deputation of the agitated JEs also called on Deputy Commissioner, Samba, and apprised him of the matter. They also demanded action against the sarpanch. When contacted over phone, Varinder refuted the reports that he had manhandled, or beaten up the JE. "I simply asked him who is getting the work done on the road and if any tender was floated for it," he claimed. He alleged that there was a big scandal in R&B sub-division, Samba, as construction works worth over Rs 70 lakh had been allotted to a select group of contractors without floating tenders. He said he had also filed RTIs in this regard. He termed the today's strike by JEs as a pressure tactics so that "he withdraws his RTI applications, seeking details of works executed by them in different Samba areas". Meanwhile, the JEs said they would also lodge a complaint with police against the sarpanch. |
