Azad, Shinde in fray for Home Ministry | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 27: Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde are emerging as the frontrunners for the post of Union Home Minister. Government sources said that Azad's name is at the top of the list as he is seen as a 'performing minister' in the Union cabinet and an active Congressman in party politics. Sources said Azad is seen as an ideal choice to succeed P. Chidambaram because he comes from Jammu and Kashmir and is from the minority community. Azad has wide experience as a cabinet minister and as former Chief Minister of J&K. If chosen for the post, Azad will only be the second Muslim to become the Home Minister after Mufti Moham mad Sayeed, who had the chair in 1989. The other strong contender is Sushil Kumar Shinde, who also has a formidable experience as a political leader from Maharashtra. Sources said Shinde is making a strong bid to move from the power Ministry to Home, as he wants to enter the 'big league' of Ministries, given his stature. However, if Shinde is appointed as the leader of the House, a position vacated by Pranab Mukherjee, in the upcoming Monsoon session, top sources said Azad could edge him to become the home minister. Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily is also being spoken about in government circles as the 'dark horse' for the Home Minister's chair but a source said Moily won't make the cut. The much-anticipated reshuffle is likely to take place in September after the Monsoon session of Parliament concludes and P. Chidam baram heads back to the finance ministry. Prime Minister Man mohan Singh is believed to have complete faith in Chidam baram's ability to handle the economic crisis and policy paralysis with swift decisions and political tact. |
