| Irregularities in Satwari-Kunjwani 4-lanning work | | Is anyone watching? | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, July 27: Greed and gluttony of the engineers of the PWD is threatening the longevity of the crucial bridge and culvert on the Satwari- Kunjwani road, widening work on which is going on as part of the 4-lanning of the said road and those at the helm of affairs have turned a blind eye to the discrepancies in the important project of extension of bridge and culvert, shinigling and metalling of road and pre mixing. Sources in the department disclosed that as per the details of the work, the contractor was obliged to dump the material excavated from the site one kilometre away and the filling was to be done by River Bed Material (RBM), but the filling at the site is being done by the same excavated material thereby embezzling not only public funds but also compromising the quality of the project. "The fund allocation for the project includes the cost of dumping the excavated material one kilometre away from the site and filling up by RBM, but they are doing entire filling with the same excavated material thus saving the cost of carriage and transportation and also the cost of RBM" said a source associated with the project. "Besides saving the costs, they are also compromising on the longevity of the road as the excavated material has high content of polythene and other solid waste" he added. Mohammad Ayub Wani, AEE incharge of the project when contacted about the irregularity, however, refuted the allegations. "We could not dispose off the excavated material because during the construction of the culvert, the iron bars caved in forcing us to re do the work, but it shall be disposed off and RBM shall be brought in for filling as laid down in the details of the project," he explained. |
