From retired DGPs to SSPs, all are part of nexus involving misuse of official cars | They unauthorisedly get petrol from PCR | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, July 27: Some DGPs and scores of ADGPs, IGPs, DIGPs and SSPs, who have retired from J&K Police, are still a burden on the State exchequer. All of them have retained official ambassadors and other luxury cars and get petrol from Police Control Room (PCR). While all of them are aware of the law and know that rules and regulations do not permit them to retain official cars after retirement, they do so to flaunt their ostentatious attitude and show-off to earn clout. DGP Ashok Prasad was said to have taken a serious note of it and might in a day or two issue an order to take back these vehicles from the retired police personnel. A source in J&K police headquarters said some serving and retired SSPs and other middle and higher rung officers had four-plus official vehicles (all AC) with them. While one AC car was solely kept to take dogs and other pets to clinics of veterinary doctors for a regular check-up, others were being used to carry their wives, children and grandchildren, the sources added. Sources said hundreds of official cars could be seen dropping and picking up the children of these officers and bureaucrats outside Convent School at Gandhi Nagar and outside Delhi Public School (Jammu branch) near Shaheedi Chowk. So “influential” are these people that many of them get “official” petrol unauthorisedly from PCR for their personal use. “A non-state subject DGP, who is putting up in a rented house somewhere at Rehari here and who retired over a decade, or so back, still uses an official car,” the sources added and alleged that PCR had been giving him petrol every day for his personal use. Another retired DGP, who lives at Gandhi Nagar, does not have an official vehicle but he uses beacon light illegally. He retired over two decades back. Known as “Mr Honest” in State Police circles, another DGP too has retained a car after his retirement over an year, or so back. Three to four retired ADGPs too have official cars with them. An IGP, who also served as a PSC member after his retirement, too has an official car in his garage. As per rule, SSP is authorised to keep only one car and a Maruti Gypsy. While DIG too cannot keep more than a car and a Gypsy, IGP is authorised to have one car and two Gypsies. Sources said, while some SSPs had more than four-plus vehicles, DIGs and IGPs had six to seven vehicles. A district SP (not of Jammu) daily comes home at Chhani Himmat here after covering a distance of about 50 km in his official vehicle. Even water tanker comes his home from his district three to four times a week. Sources said the flagrant misuse of official vehicles and fuel by these officers was going on unnoticed for the past several years. They were really a burden on the State exchequer, the sources added. |
