| Major crackdown in Bangladesh, 14 arrested | | | Dhaka | Feb 4 Political crisis spiralled in Bangladesh today as the army arrested 14 former Ministers, MPs and business tycoons in the wee hours on corruption charges.
The detainees include former Communications Minister Barrister Nazmul Huda, former PM's parliamentary affairs advisor Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury, former State Minister for Power Iqbal Hassan Mahmud, former State Minister for Civil Aviation Mir Nasir, former State Minister for Labour and Employment Amanullah Aman, former Deputy Minister for Land Ruhul Quddus Dulu, former Finance Minister Saifur Rahman’s son and ex-MP Naser Rahman, former State Minister for Works Alamgir Kabir, and ex-Chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board and former MP Wadud Bhuiyan of BNP.
Besides, former Home Minister of the Awami League government (1996-2001) Mohammad Nasim, former State Minister for Civil Aviation Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, industrialist and AL Chief Sheikh Hasina’s advisor Salman F Rahman and ex-MP Lotus Kamal were arrested during the massive raids in the across-the-board action.
Specific allegations against the arrested leaders could not be known immediately, but Communications Advisor of the caretaker government Major General (Rtd) MA Matin told reporters that the arrested people will be tried for corruption.
The arrested politicians are learnt to be in custody of security personnel where they were being interrogated.
The joint forces also raided the houses of a number of other politicians and businessmen in the capital as well as in different districts, but failed to find them.
There were no official reactions from the two former ruling parties--BNP of Khaleda Zia and Awami League of Sheikh Hasina--over the arrests till evening.
''A panicky atmosphere prevails in the circles of BNP and Awami League leaders,'' said many a source close to the rival political camps.
The latest arrests took to over 42,000 the grand total of suspected persons reined in since the special anticrime drive got off at the directive of the interim caretaker government, which came at then helms affairs following a serious political crisis over the general election, which now is stalled.
