Retired police officers call up ET, say they do have official cars but don’t take fuel from PCR

jammu, July 28: After going through the news story that appeared on front page of the today’s edition of Early Times under the caption: “From retired DGPs to senior cops majority are part of nexus involving misuse of official cars”, some retired and serving police officers called up ET office and confessed to having “unauthorised” possession of official cars, or Maruti Gypsies but claimed that they were not taking petrol from PCR, Jammu.
“I do have retained a Gypsy but let me tell you I do not take petrol from PCR,” a retired police officer said.
Another retired officer said sarcastically: “Good story. I am going to soon return my official vehicle to the department but what did you get out of it?”
There was a mixed reaction to the story by others. Majority of the callers, however, held the view that if the Police department, or the Government did not have any objection, why the newspaper was worried.
Their reactions notwithstanding, they will have to return the vehicles, which are under their illegal possession, to the Police Department as it faces a ban from the MHA to purchase new vehicles during the current financial year.
Sources in J&K Police said due to the MHA ban on purchase new vehicles, the State Psolice has no alternative other than taking back cars from the retired police personnel to meet the requirements of serving police officers.
Also, DGP Ashok Prasad would not like his force to under-perform due to the “shortage” of vehicles.
Sources said most of the retired DGPs, and the other higher, and middle rung police officers had been getting five litres of petrol per day from PCR.
This means 150 litres of petrol worth over Rs 10,000 per month to each officer. If 20 odd retired officers were supposed to be the part of the racket, the scam roughly runs into crores as some of them are availing the facility illegally for the past over one decade now.
A PCR officer, who did not want to be quoted, however, said it was easy for them to show in records that the fuel had been issued to serving officers and not in the name of retired officers.
Sources said majority of the retired DGPs and other police officers had also retained police drivers, besides cars and other vehicles.
“While they surrender their official cars, which they are not authorised to retain, the department will also take back official drivers from them,” the sources added.
Sources said while the wives and children of retired and serving police officers go for morning walk inside Jammu University, official cars with official drivers wait for them for hours outside.
These drivers are also “forced” by the retired officers to do their household works and other menial jobs. They virtually act as their “official” servants.
