Antony visits LoC, gets brief from field commander | | | early times report Srinagar, July 29 : Close on the heels of admission by a senior Army officer that about 30 to 40 militants have managed to enter the Kashmir valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) during this year, Defence Minister A K Antony visited forward areas in Uri sector. Antony, shortly after his arrival here yesterday on a two-day visit to the Kashmir valley, flew to Uri sector to get first hand information about the militant activities on other side of the Line of Control (LoC). Accompanied by Chief of the Army staff Gen Bikram Singh, Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma and GoC Northern Command Lt Gen K T Parnaik interacted with the Army personnel, guarding the LoC. Antony was given a detailed briefing by the field commanders about the measures taken to foil any infiltration bid from across the border. Defence sources said that he was informed about damage caused to fence due to heavy snowfall last winter and measures to repair it. The visit of the Defence Minister came few days after Lt Gen Parnaik during 'Vijay Diwas' function at Kargil had admitted that about 30 to 40 militants have managed to enter the Kashmir valley. He said this was evident from the recent encounters in the woods in north Kashmir in which a number of militants, who might have infiltrated from PoK, were killed. The Defence Minister was informed that according to intelligence gathered from different sources, there are about 400 militants in launch pads in PoK near the LoC, ready to infiltrate into this side. It is not humanly possible to foil each and every infiltration bid from across the border because of difficult topography. However, the troops have already intensified night and foot patrolling all along the LoC to scuttle any such attempt. Besides a number of other steps, including installation of latst gadgets to track any movement, have been taken, he was informed. Sources said during 2012, there were 40 infiltration attempts from across the border, even during winter. However, the number of attempts increased with the melting of snow on infiltration routes. Antony was informed that the number of infiltration attempts will increase during the next few months before the higher reaches experience snowfall. However, the field commanders have assured the Defence Minister that adequate measures have been taken to foil all such attempts. |
