Declare Jammu region as drought affected : AJKKU | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: All J&K Kissan Union (AJKKU) today demanded declaring entire Jammu region as drought affected and providing full compensation to the farmers for the damage they suffered to their crops during Rabi season and the current Kharief crop due to long dry spell and failure of monsoon. It also pleaded for providing 6 months free ration to the affected population.As part of campaign to meet various central leaders and members of parliament to press for acceptance of demands, a delegation of AJKKU met former Union Minister and Member of Parliament, Mani Shanker Aiyer in New Delhi today and urged him to take up the cause of the farmers of J&K at appropriate levels at the centre and in the state to resolve their hardships.It was stated that AJKKU has been projecting the demands of drought affected farmers by organizing dharnas and submitting memorandums for the past 3 months but nothing has been done in this regard. A nineteen members delegation of farmers led by AJKKU Chairman Ashok Sharma brought to the notice of Aiyer that in addition to providing a special package to offset the loss of farmers and action plan be formulated on urgent basis for tapping possible water resources, including lift irrigation and rain water harvesting to bring maximum cultivable land under assured means of irrigation. Responding to the demands, Aiyer assured to take up the matter immediately with the J&K Chief Minister and the Agriculture Minister besides the Union Agriculture Secretary. |
