JAMMU, July 29: Sometime back, Union Minister of Law and Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid used the front page of Indian Express to let it be known that the Congress needs "ideological direction" from UPA chairperson and AICC president Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi and that "until now, we have only seen cameos of his thought and ideas like democratizing elections in youth Congress, but he has not weaved all of this into a grand announcement". We also had AICC general secretary and former MP Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, also called the mentor of Congress "Prince", imploring 10 Janpath: "The time has come for Rahul to assume a larger role. He has been confining himself to the youth Congress…He should come into the mainstream. This is the demand of all Congressmen". There were others like External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who also lost no time in joining the chorus. Two days ago, 10 Congress MPs urged Sonia Gandhi to nominate Rahul as Leader of the Lok Sabha. And yesterday, it was Home Minister P Chidambaram who also took the plunge and said that the "young leader (Rahul) will do 'very well' in government as well as the Congress". "Why not? Gandhi can accept an office in government or in the party or in the House. I am sure that he will do very well in any of these places," he told Malayalam news channel Jaihind TV. It needs to be underlined that the chorus for Rahul Gandhi playing a larger role in the Congress party is growing louder by the day with AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh urging the high command to give a "decisive" responsibility and another senior leader making a strong pitch for projecting him as Prime Ministerial candidate in the 2014 general elections.
What Digvijay Singh and Salman Khurshid had been saying had its impact on Sonia Gandhi, who told reporters some 10 days ago that "no one can take a decision on Rahul Gandhi's behalf. He has to take a decision". (Perhaps, Singh and Salman spoke what they were asked to speak to prepare ground for the elevation of Rahul.) The very next day, Rahul indicated his desire to play a larger role in the government and the organization. "I will play a more proactive role in the party and the government. The decision has been taken, the timing is up to my two bosses - the Congress president and the Prime Minister (read regent)".
The statement made by the "Queen" and the positive indication given by the Congress "Prince" have triggered a debate among the sycophants in the party. Digvijay Singh yesterday said: He would want Rahul Gandhi to play a larger role in the party, as the 2014 general elections are very crucial for the Congress party. He told Zee TV that Rahul's joining the government at this point in time will not help the party much. But there are some who believe that "If Rahul is given a ministry in the government and stripped of his post in the party, gross injustice would be done to the teeming millions who expect him to lead the Congress". And there are some who believe that "if he is not given a ministry then that too would be gross injustice to the teeming millions who want to see him leading the government". And between them, there are sycophants in the Congress party who believe that "in order to be fair to all", Rahul Gandhi needs to be given "dual responsibility with the ultimate aim of leading both the Congress and the government it heads".
What does all this prove? It proves that there is none in the over 125-year-old party who is capable of running the party and leading the government at the centre. It also proves that the sycophants in the Congress party have finally come to believe that there is but one way in which the sinking Congress boat could be rescued and government at the centre recaptured in May 2014 and that is by putting all eggs in the Rahul's basket. They do not believe that Rahul failed the party in the assembly elections in many states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. They also do not believe that Rahul Gandhi is already in the Congress party as its boss and, like her mother, the de-fecto head of the government. They also do not share the views of those who say that Sonia and Rahul constitute the Congress high command and that the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cannot move an inch without their prior permission. The fact is that the mother-son duo controls the party and control the government sans accountability and responsibility. They know everything. And, yet they are saying what they are saying. But the circumstances in the country are such that nothing will help the Congress party. Those who believe that Rahul can be the saviour are blissfully ignorant of the ground realities. There is consensus that Rahul and Sonia are no more assets for the party. In other words, there is consensus that Sonia and Rahul are not vote-catchers. They base their assessment on the election results in Uttar Pradesh, especially its Rae Bareli and Amethi Lok Sabha constituencies once the pocket boroughs of the Gandhi family. In the just-held assembly elections in UP, the people decimated the Congress in both these constituencies and this happened despite the hectic campaigning by Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Priyanka campaigned in these two constituencies, along with her small children, for more than four weeks.
