Omar & Co extending cold shoulder to Senior Abdullah?
7/29/2012 11:54:57 PM
Abodh Sharma
Jammu, July 29: The leader who stands heads and shoulder above in the political class of the state is facing a cold shoulder by the State Government headed by none other than his own son.
A closer look at the sequence of events in the last couple of important public functions held in the state amply clarify that Omar and Co have deliberately or inadvertently ignored senior Abdullah, by far the tallest leader in the state polity by every sense of the word.
During the recent visit of the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs S M Krishna to the valley a few days back, two stones were laid; one for the inauguration of the Passport Seva Kendra and the other for the new passport office, but the name of Dr. Farooq Abdullah was missing in both the stones eventhough he was present in the function.
The norms of protocol demanded the name of Dr. Abdullah to be inscribed on the stones as he is not only the Union Cabinet Minister but also the sitting Member of Parliament from Srinagar. Besides, he was the only other Union Cabinet Minister present on the occasion besides SM Krishna.
Sources in the party pleading anonymity divulge that this is not the first time that Senior Abdullah has been deprived of his deserving place and space in the functions of the state government. "This has happened on several occasions in the past. Cold shouldering of the Qaed-i-saani who is revered by the rank and file of the party embarrasses the workers more than anybody else because Doctor sahib himself is far above all these things," said a party functionary pleading anonymity. "Last year during the award ceremony of the state awardees, Farooq Abdullah was not given a seat on the dais. In another function of the tourism department at the banks of Jhelum, Omar, Jora and Nasir Wani occupied the centre stage and Dr. Farooq Abdullah's name did not figure on the stone" he said.
Sources in the party disclose that Dr. Farooq Abdullah himself takes care to stay on the margin in functions where he has to be present along with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah so that the focus stays on the latter.
While being the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is obliged to be at the centre stage in all official functions of the state government, it is important for the Omar led dispensation to remember that besides being MP and the Union Minister, Farooq Abdullah had won elections from two Assembly constituencies and then relinquished both to join Union Government through Rajya Sabha, offering Chief Minister's chair and office to his son.
