Power cut amid sweltering heat causes extreme discomfort to people | Out of our control: Chief Engineer PDD | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 31 : Due to development of yet another snag in the country's northern grid, fasting people, amid scorching heat in Kashmir had to face extreme hardships today when power supply abruptly stopped. Majority of areas in the valley were hit by the power failure, giving people uneasy times during most of the day. "There is a technical snag in the northern grid, which is beyond our control", said Chief Engineer of the Power Development Department (PDD) Kashmir. "I won't be able to confirm how long it will take to rectify the snag", he added. People in Srinagar said the power failure was causing immense hardship as they are observing Ramzan fast amid an unusual spell of hot weather in Kashmir Valley. Because of the longer days in July, people have to fast for nearly 16 hours. "Scorching heat is causing perspiration making it very difficult for fasting people as they cannot take any fluids", said Zahid Ahmad a student at Kashmir University. However, the Chief Engineer expressed hope that situation will improve shortly. "We have diverted all the available electric supply from Uri Hydel Project to sustain supply of power and essential services", he said. Meanwhile according to sources, a high level meeting, headed by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was today held at the Civil Secretariat to take stock of the situation. The Chief Minister telephoned the Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to get latest updates on the snag in the northern grid, sources added. He is also believed to be in constant touch with the authorities to meet the crisis. |
